You are wracked with guilt, and the Russian world around you is crumbling in part by your hand. This is how Metro: Last Light begins, and it has its ups and downs from there. You play Artyom, an a-typically vocal character in a first person shooter. He’s an emotional man with emotions that emote very emotionally. I always wanted a more vocal main character, and I find that this is more than was palatable.
First, I’ll say that I’m being judgmental and maybe even racist when I say that Russian people speaking English are very hard to relate to. The dialect is harsh and even when they’re being empathetic, it sounds mean to my ears. It compounds the issue when your player character is just SO emotional. It makes the dialogue feel forced, which is true through most of the story.
Now the good.. Metro: Last Light is a fantastic game. Despite the overacting, the story itself is decent, and the gameplay is absolutely stellar. The action is so organic and heavy that it feels like you’re literally fighting to live. You spend a great deal of time in the “Metro,” but you also have to go upstairs to the surface, where the air is toxic, requiring you to switch out rebreathers regularly. I’m not a fan of time-based obstacles, but this one works. However, on HARD, It can still completely ruin the game. I always play on HARD so it was a bitch to finish this fucking thing.
Its a standard shooter in terms of being dark and grey and muddy, which is why it was overlooked by reviewers and thus sales. It didn’t do anything to separate itself from the same formulaic shit that keeps being perpetuated by Ubisoft and EA. But there IS a better game in here. Its just a shame that it didn’t get the ad support like COD or Dead Space, because it is better than those games.
It is a heavy affair, and while the story is slightly ham fisted, the gameplay, sound and visuals are pretty great. It can be a sappy mess at times, but its fogiven when you get to blast a winged-terror from the inside of a wrecked train car. Just run through the fun, and turn YouTube on when Artyom starts to talk and you’ll be okay.
Decree: Its over a year old now, so it should be cheap. I’d recommend it to anyone. It can be a depressing mess at times, but seeing what devs can do with old technology like the 360 and the PS3, it might keep you from spending your cash on the next gen stuff this season. Game Rating: 7.5/10.
